about

Much like Britain's Trad Jazz revival, Australia played host to a vibrant Jazz scene in the mid 1950's-1960s. At the forefront of thescene was the young Dixieland-inspired ensemble, The Yarra Yarra New Orleans Jazz Band; fronted by the robust, impassioned voice of Judy Jacques.

Virtually becoming the poster girl of Australia's Trad Jazz movement; Judy made her mark as a pioneering proponent of Black Gospel Music in Australia. She would further explore this area with a later ensemble,The Gospel Four, declining an offer to join The Seekers (a position filled by her Melbourne Jazz scene contemporary Judith Durham)

Jacques would also carve out a prolific career as musical performer on TV (singing black gospel repertoire!) before a self-imposed “retirement” in the early Seventies.

This compilation draws together all of Judy's period recordings with the aforementioned groups, along with solo pop singles (including the Lee Hazlewood-penned “A Real Live Fool” and Van McCoy-penned Northern Soul dancer “You're Messin' Up My Mind”, as featured on RPM’s Come & See Me: Dream Babes and Rock Chicks from Down under). Most tracks appear on CD for the first time, some in first-time stereo.
